The name
So, where does the name come from? It's Latin, actually.
Cantio is Latin for a song. A cantionale is, well, a book of songs. A songbook for the church, the one the congregation and the choir sang from.
The word was used like that in Bohemia and in the German lands, a long time ago. And in Czech it's still around: a hymnal there is called a kancionál.
We liked that. An old word for exactly what this is, a songbook for the church. Just a bit bigger, and in a lot more languages.
